Clagett congratulates blind sailor Mitsuhiro Iwamoto on his historic achievement
NEWPORT, R.I. (April 23, 2019) – The C. Thomas Clagett, Jr. Memorial Clinic and Regatta congratulates Clagett alumni, Japanese blind sailor Mitsuhiro Iwamoto, on his historic achievement having sailed non stop from San Deigo, California to Iwaki, Japan on his 40footer Dream Weaver, assisted by his American sighted navigator, Doug Smith.
Mitsuhiro Iwamoto sailed at The Clagett in Newport in 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2011 at the Blind Nationals at Sail Newport.
This is his second attempt at this record having made his first attempt in 2013, when he unfortunately had to be rescued after his boat collided with a whale and sank.
“This is an amazing achievement for any sailor and for Mitsuhiro to accomplish this without his sight makes it all the more incredible. We want to wish him every success with all his future endeavors,” commented Judy Clagett McLennan, Clagett president and co founder.

About the C. Thomas Clagett, Jr. Memorial Clinic and Regatta: Founded in 2003, the C. Thomas Clagett, Jr. Memorial Clinic and Regatta honors the late Tom Clagett (1916-2001), a U.S. Navy World War II veteran who learned to sail on Chesapeake Bay. As a youngster he suffered temporary paralysis as the result of a bout of meningitis; an experience that left him with a deep respect for the accomplishments of people with disabilities. The Clagett’s stated mission is "to develop a program that will enable sailors with adaptive needs to reach their personal levels of achievement.". Tom Clagett's motto was "Reach for Success", which resonateswith every Clagett participant. Clagett competitors have seen medal success at the 2008, 2012 and 2016 Paralympic Games. Competitors often comment that, The Clagett, has improved their quality of life as they apply what is achieved on the water to everyday situations.
